Doha: Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply to the 2022 edition of the Summer Research Program (SRP) at Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), Hamad Bin Khalifa University.

Looking to build on the success of previous versions held between 2015 and 2019, the programme will offer students eight weeks of intensive training in specific fields of biomedical research, from May 8 to June 30.

The SRP participants can expect unique opportunities to gain hands-on laboratory research experience under the supervision of distinguished QBRI researchers in a supportive, challenging, and knowledge conducive environment. That includes learning firsthand about biomedical research protocols and techniques related to biomarker development, and other areas such as stem cells, breast cancer, autism, and diabetes.

Students can select from a list of available projects under QBRI’s Diabetes Research Centre, Translational Cancer and Immunity Centre, and Neurological Disorders Research Centre.

Commenting on the Summer Research Program, Lina Hassna, Programs and Partnership Senior Manager at QBRI, said, “We are proud to announce the launch of the sixth edition of the SRP. In its previous versions, this successful programme has attracted 70 undergraduate students, some joining HBKU graduate programmes and pursuing their master’s and PhD degrees under the supervision of QBRI researchers.”

During the programme, students will gain access to QBRI’s state-of-the-art research facilities that are on a par with those at top institutions around the world.

In addition, the programme will enrich participants’ experience outside the laboratory through a series of seminars, workshops, and informal engagement with the scientific community at QBRI and other leading biomedical research institutions.

“QBRI’s Summer Research Program is an exceptional opportunity for students to experience exciting areas of basic and translational scientific research.

Since launching the programme in 2015, we have seen the lasting impact for young scientists who have been part of the unique training, and the mentorship and lab experience it comes with. Students will leave better prepared to further their interests in health and biomedical research, and eventually make their own contributions to improving lives,” said Dr. Omar El Agnaf, Executive Director at QBRI.

To be considered for the competitive programme, applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate programme in biological/medical related science and have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applications will be evaluated by QBRI’s selection committee based on a student’s academic record and performance, letters of recommendation, and an interview. The intensive nature of the programme requires a full-time commitment over the eight weeks.

The deadline to apply for the SRP 2022 is March 20.
