Doha, Qatar: Illegal fishing nets were confiscated from a fishing boat during an inspection tour at Al Khor port, announced the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC).
In a statement on Twitter, MoECC said the seizure was made by its Marine Protection Department's Al Khor Marine Unit.
According to the Ministry, the seized nets are one of the most harmful forms of fishing tools as they catch all types of fish in varying sizes, preventing fish multiplication and increasing the threat of extinction.
Recently, MoECC also confiscated abandoned fishing nets near Al Alia Island. The seized nets affect all kinds of wildlife, in which fish, grasses, coral reefs, turtles, dugongs, birds and marine engines get stuck, the Ministry said.
The Marine Environment Protection Department constantly warns of illegal marine fishing practices, which lead to the risk of losing endangered species and harming the marine environment.
