Women in STEM take centre stage at DWF-UDST event

Doha, Qatar: Doha Women Forum organised an event titled ‘Shaping Tomorrow: STEMpowered Women’ at the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science recently. 

The event gathered influential female leaders in STEM to inspire, mentor, and empower the next generation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It featured a dynamic panel discussion with leading women in STEM from academia, industry, and entrepreneurship. The discussion highlighted their journeys, the challenges they have overcome, and the critical role of mentorship in shaping future female leaders in STEM. The event was opened by Dr. Rosie Bateson, Dean, College of General Education, who reaffirmed the university’s commitment to fostering inclusive and diverse talent in STEM.

“Empowering women in STEM is not just about representation—it is a recognition of their ability to excel in STEM disciplines and to unlock the full potential of our society. UDST is dedicated to equipping young women with the knowledge and skills to innovate and to be role models in the fields of science and technology,” said Dr. Rosie Bateson.

Ambassador of Spain to Qatar HE Javier Carbajosa Sanchez delivered a keynote speech highlighting the importance of international collaboration in STEM and the role of women in driving global innovation.

“Women in STEM are shaping the future, breaking barriers, and leading industries worldwide. Events like this are essential to fostering an inclusive and forward-thinking ecosystem where women can thrive,” he said.

The Doha Women Forum, led by its founder Conchita Ponce, has played a key role in highlighting the growing impact and contributions of women in STEM in Qatar. The initiative supports Qatar’s ongoing investment in STEM education, research, and innovation, fostering an environment where women can actively participate, lead, and drive advancements across various scientific and technological fields.

“The presence of accomplished women in STEM today is more than just inspiring—it’s a roadmap for the young women of tomorrow. By sharing their journeys, these role models are proving that STEM is a space where women belong, lead, and innovate” said Ponce. 

Event highlights included a panel discussion featuring renowned female STEM professionals who shared their insights and experiences: 
• Dr. Dhabia Al Mohannadi, Assistant Professor at HBKU
• Narjiss Sallah, AI Consultant at Primary Health Care
• Fatima Sultan Al-Kuwari, Group Chief HR & Sustainability Officer at Ooredoo Group
• Ashley Brantley, CEO of Girls in Aviation

STEM Excellence Awards recognized outstanding contributions in various categories:

• Research and Innovation - Dr. Dhabia Ali Mohannadi, Assistant Professor, HBKU College of Science and Engineering
• Community Impact and Advocacy - Eng. Abeer Abu Helaiqa, Founder and Vice Chairperson of Qatar Women Engineers Association
• Sustainability and Environmental Impact - Dr. Deema Almasri, Environmental Scientist
• Technology & Innovation - Rhana Kurdi, CEO and Founder, Skydrops Water

Exhibitors from different schools participated in the STEM Exhibition, with The Next Generation School receiving the Excellence in STEM Showcase Award. The winner was awarded QR3,000 and a certificate.

Dr. Dhabia Al Mohannadi emphasized the critical role of sustainable engineering in shaping the future:

“Interdisciplinary collaboration and sustainable innovation are key to solving global challenges. Encouraging more women in STEM is not just about equality—it’s about bringing new perspectives to drive progress.”

Narjiss Sallah, a leading expert in AI, spoke about the transformative power of artificial intelligence:

“AI is reshaping industries at an unprecedented rate. The more diverse our talent pool, the more innovative and ethical our solutions will be. Women in AI will play a crucial role in shaping responsible and inclusive technology.”

The Doha Women Forum reaffirmed its commitment to driving initiatives that empower women, foster mentorship, and expand opportunities for women in STEM and beyond. By providing a platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and inspiration, the Forum continues to shape a future where women are leaders, innovators, and changemakers across diverse fields.

As Qatar strengthens its investment in STEM education, research, and technological innovation, the participation and leadership of women will be essential in driving progress, shaping industries, and contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive future.
