The country continues to experience cold weather and as Qatar enters into the coldest days of the year called ‘Bard Al Azariq,’ people are more susceptible to diseases common in winter.
The key to avoid sickness is “good ventilation,” said an otolaryngology specialist.
Ocean Medical Centre, ENT Specialist, Dr. Sherwin Abubakar told The Peninsula that in winter season, people tend to stay indoors, thus they are more exposed to common house allergens, including molds, animal dander from pets and cockroaches, and allergic rhinitis may exacerbate leading to acute bacterial sinusitis and ear infections like bacterial otitis media and glue ears especially in kids.
“Good ventilation at home is key. Physical activities are essential whether we are in a pandemic or not. Also, consumption of healthy foods and less junk foods are advised to boost our immune system and general well-being,” Dr. Abubakar explained.
He also advised the public to get vaccinated to prevent ENT infections. “Getting vaccinated is the most important thing, it doesn’t warrant a person that he will not acquire COVID-19 infections, but it will prevent him from being hospitalised.
“Medical problems such as ENT diseases are undermanaged due to fear of going to clinics and hospitals. Study shows that allergic rhinitis cases are down during the pandemic due to preventive measures. This is because we are mandated to use face mask, observe physical distancing and maintain proper hygiene. Travel is also less, resulting in less pollution,” Dr. Abubakar said.
Allergic rhinitis also known as hay fever is a type of inflammation in nose which occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air.
Among the signs and symptoms are sneezing, congestion, itchy nose, sore throat, red, itchy and watery eyes and swelling around the eyes. If a person is suffering from loss of smell or sore throat, in such cases precaution is necessary and isolation must be observed and Rapid Antigen test must be carried out.
“The test has high accuracy in detecting COVID-19 infection and result is available within minutes,” he added.
