The Australian Embassy in Qatar has invited the public to a solo concert by multi-award winning Australian oud virtuoso, Joseph Tawadros.

The concert is free to attend and planned for tomorrow, May 20 at the Museum of Islamic Art Atrium. The performance starts at 5.30pm.

Australian Ambassador to Qatar, H E Jonathan Muir said in a tweet: “Come and hear the oud you’ve never heard before!”

Tawadros is a leading oud virtuoso, composer and a seven-time Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) award winner. He is also a member of the Order of Australia for Services to Music (AM).

Prior to Qatar’s event, he  performed in Amman, Jordan.

His oud has made its melodic presence known in various films and TV productions, including Ali’s Wedding, The Last Days of Yasser Arafat, Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo, I Remember 1948, The Water Diviner, Checkpoint, The Tentmakers of Cairo, All About E, Love Marriage in Kabul, The Portal, Haneen, The Black Balloon, The Transfer, and The Last Ride, featuring the acclaimed actor Hugo Weaving.

Born in Cairo, Tawadros’ preferred instrument is oud, an Arabic lute that is akin to both the lute and the contemporary guitar.

He is a versatile and sensitive virtuoso who performs in concert venues all over the world, and is renowned for his superb technique, in-depth musicianship, narrative, and upbeat presentation style.

He has showcased his original compositions alongside renowned orchestras such as the Australian Chamber Orchestra, BBC Symphony, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Ukraine National Orchestra, Camerata Salzburg, and the Morphing Chamber Orchestra. His notable work, the Concerto for Oud & Orchestra, was performed and released by ABC Classics, Australia in 2019, in collaboration with the Sydney Symphony.

Additionally, he achieved a significant milestone as the sole Australian composer to have his music performed by the prestigious Academy of Ancient Music in the United Kingdom.
