Doha: Qatar University Library (QUL) inaugurated late Dr. Ahmed Al Obaidan books collection, which included more than 20,000 volumes that covers topics from literature, poetry, Sharia, jurisprudence, interpretations, history and others.
The unique collection is donated to Qatar University Library to enrich the Qatari collection as well as the general collection. Titles include valuable books, periodicals, and documents in many different fields of knowledge.
This huge library was inaugurated amid the presence of a large presentation by the President of Qatar University, Dr. Hassan bin Rashid Al Derham and his deputies, in addition to other important figures from the community, and in the presence of a journalist, to cover this important cultural event that establishes a culture of transferring private libraries to the general readership.
The ceremony included a welcoming speech for the guests, a presentation of the library’s transfer video, snapshots of the biography of the late Dr. Ahmed Obaidan, and words of thanks, then the inauguration of the library, a tour inside it, and a gift for the guests represented in a luxurious edition of his book about Qatari proverbs, a valuable book that was first published in 1985 and then reprinted by his family after his death was distributed free of charge to the audience.
In his speech on this occasion, Dr. Hassan bin Rashid Al Derham, praised this humanitarian and cultural initiative, which was represented in transferring a huge and rich library of a national figure known for its national giving to the Library of Qatar University. A new tradition that serves the present and future generations, and is an ongoing charity.
He said that the transfer of the library of Ahmed Al Obaidan to the library of Qatar University is an initiative that Qatar University cannot but respond with all appreciation, praise and thanks to his family.
Director of the University Libraries Department, Professor Asma Al Buainain said: “Today, Qatar University Library celebrated the books donated by Dr. Ahmed Al Obaidan’s collection. The valuable collection includes about 20,000 volumes that covers topics from literature, poetry, Sharia, jurisprudence, interpretations, history and others that will enrich Qatar University’s library with its distinguished academic groups.”
Buthaina Ibrahim Muhammad Al Langawi, the wife of the late and the founder of the idea of holding this event, said that she thanks everyone who contributed to the establishment of this important event.
