Doha, Qatar: More than 400 skywatchers and enthusiasts of celestial phenomena in Qatar were treated to a spectacular display as the Perseid meteor shower graced the skies over the past two days, from August 12 to 13.

Ajith Everester, an accomplished astrophotographer and the man behind the Everester Observatory, orchestrated a series of events held in Al Kharrara during the said dates.

He told The Peninsula that the event was marked by the observation of over 80 meteor showers throughout the two-night period.

The Perseid meteor shower stands as a highly anticipated celestial occurrence each year, drawing widespread excitement and anticipation from stargazers around the world.

Amidst the exhilarating celestial events that August brings to skywatching aficionados, Everester noted the burgeoning interest in astronomy among the populace of Qatar. Reflecting on the unexpected turnout even on a weekday, he remarked: “the substantial attendance has been surprising, and the ongoing stream of inquiries is equally remarkable.”

Furthermore, Everester highlighted the attendees’ expressed eagerness to join astronomy clubs and cultivate a deeper understanding of astronomy and astrophotography. Offering advice to budding astrophotographers, he emphasised the need for continuous dedication, as the local availability of telescopes remains limited.

Kumar and Shana, first-time observers of the meteor showers, described the experience as awe-inspiring and expressed gratitude to Everester for organising the event and providing invaluable guidance.

The enthusiasm among those who witnessed the meteor shower is now directed toward the upcoming Saturn opposition on August 26—an astronomical event where Saturn will be at its closest approach to Earth. Everester’s observatory is poised to host a special event to commemorate this occasion, affording enthusiasts the chance to marvel at Saturn’s resplendent presence in the night sky.

The celestial extravaganza of August will culminate with the appearance of a Super Blue Moon on August 30, adding to the calendar of astronomical wonders for the month.

For those eager to partake in the Saturn opposition on August 26 and the Super Blue Moon viewing on August 30, interested individuals can reach out to the Everester Observatory at 5548 2045 to secure their participation.
