Doha, Qatar: Dr. Sarah Rashid Musa, Community Medicine Specialist and Wellness Center in Charge at Rawdat Al Khail Health Center at the Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC), stated that “World Obesity Day has been observed globally on March 4 every year since 2020 to raise awareness about obesity and its associated risks, including diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems.” She added: “This year’s theme, “Changing System, Healthier Lives,” highlights that obesity is a complex issue requiring a multifaceted approach rather than just individual efforts.”

She emphasized the need for collaborative changes across various levels, including healthcare systems, food environments, and public policies. This day calls for adopting healthier lifestyles, implementing policy reforms, and introducing preventive and medical interventions.

As part of the celebration, the Wellness Center at Rawdat Al Khail Health Center, in partnership with doctors, nurses, health educators, and wellness specialists, organized an event aimed at raising awareness about obesity risk factors, complications, and preventive measures. The campaign featured an awareness booth where brochures were distributed on healthy lifestyles, physical activity, and dietary guidelines during Ramadan.

The event also included health screenings conducted in multiple stages. It began with an assessment of vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse rate, followed by calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI), which estimates body fat based on height and weight. Waist circumference was then measured, and the screening concluded with a blood sugar test.

Dr. Sarah explained that the health screening was structured in phases to ensure participants received consultations with a doctor or health educator. During these consultations, participants were provided with a summary of their measurements, indicating whether they were within normal or abnormal ranges. In addition, discussions were encouraged regarding the implications and necessary follow-up actions. Personalized recommendations were also given based on individual goals, measurements, and lifestyle factors, including physical activity, nutrition, sleep, mental health, smoking, hydration, and weight management.

Additionally, participants had the option to be referred to wellness services such as the Healthy Lifestyle Clinic, the Wellness Educator Clinic, and the gym, should they choose to embark on a journey toward a healthier lifestyle.

She concluded by emphasizing that adopting a system-based approach can drive policymakers, healthcare professionals, and communities to collaborate in creating a healthier environment. She pointed out that this cross-sector collaboration aligns with this year’s theme, as the campaign aims to advocate for combating obesity-related factors and overweight issues throughout the year by providing suitable services and increasing patient engagement.
