Simultaneously, the Souq Waqif Local Dates Festival, being hosted at Al Ahmad Square in the traditional marketplace, is also concluding its eighth edition today.
Commencing on July 27, the festival features an impressive display of over 103 local farms, showcasing 14 distinct date varieties.
Souq Waqif Local Dates Festival General Supervisor, Khaled Saif Al Suwaidi highlighted its contribution to food security and the support for local producers, especially of dates. He told The Peninsula that the festival, held in conjunction with the date harvest season in the country, has garnered significant interest and support.
The festival also aims to uplift the agricultural sector and support farm owners and enthusiasts involved in palm cultivation. The festival also plays a crucial role in upgrading the varieties of dates available in Qatar. This year’s edition stands out with the highest number of local farms participating compared to previous years.
Organisers have reported sales of 174,866kg of dates during the festival as of Thursday.
Beyond the variety of dates on display, the Souq Waqif Local Dates Festival also showcases an array of products derived from dates, including pastries, cakes, jams, juices, smoothies, pickles, and even ice-cream, all available for purchase at the venue.
