Cairo: President of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah held meetings with heads and representatives of national human rights institutions participating in the international conference organised by Qatar’s National Human Rights Committee and the Arab Network on “International Solidarity and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions”, in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
Al Attiyah met with Speaker of the Arab Parliament H E Adel Al Assoumi, Director of the Human Rights Department of the Arab League Mounir El Fassi, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Egypt Elena Panova, Director of Human Rights Department at the Gulf Cooperation Council Abdullah Al Ajmi, Chairman of the Organizations and International Relations Committee of Oman Human Rights Commission Sheikh Dr. Hilal bin Saeed Al-Shaidani, Electoral Program Advisor in the Arab countries and the United Nations Development Program Luis Martinez, and Chairman of the National Human Rights Authority in the UAE Dr. Maqsoud Kruse.
The meetings discussed aspects of cooperation in issues of common interest, activating mechanisms for transferring experiences and exchanging best practices in the process of protecting and promoting human rights, as well as the role of national human rights institutions in implementing and following up on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and coordination mechanisms to achieve the conference’s recommendations on the ground.
The conference kicked off on Sunday with the participation of experts and representatives of all 15 national human rights institutions that are members of the Arab Network, representatives of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and its Executive Office, and the secretariats of the four regional networks accredited by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, in addition to representatives of the Charter Committee and the Arab Institute for Human Rights, representatives of the Arab League and the host country, Egypt, as well as institutions and organizations of statistics and parliamentarians.
