Doha, Qatar: As part of its endeavours to revive the folk traditions, the Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, held yesterday Haya Baya where children participated wearing Qatari folk dress.
The participating girls chanted popular chants associated with this heritage before all the children threw their plants into the sea.
Haya Baya is a popular tradition in a number of countries in the Gulf region, where children gather since the month of Dhul Hijjah, and each child brings an empty preserved box or small wicker baskets, in which some plants are planted.
The child undertakes to irrigate them while preserving and caring for them. This is an important part of this popular practice. The larger the plant is, the more reason for the pride of its owner in front of his peers.
Various individuals praised the various events and activities carried out by Katara which are of heritage and educational nature, working to revive the heritage of the ancestors on the one hand, and to inform the youth about it on the other hand.
