Doha: Al Shomos under jockey Jefferson Smith sealed a commanding victory to clinch the Local Thoroughbred Trophy at Al Uqda Racecourse yesterday.

The eight-year-old mare, owned by Mubarak bin Saeed Aljafai Al Naimi, built on her runner-up effort last time out for trainer Ahmed Kobeissi to claim two-and-a-half length victory in the 1400m contest for 4YO+ - the feature at Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) 17th Race Meeting at Al Uqda Complex.

It was Jefferson’s second victory of the day after he guided Hassan Ali Alabdulmalik’s homebred Nano Toro to win in the 1400m Handicap (0-75) for 3YO Thoroughbreds.

Meanwhile, H E Sheikha Iman bint Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Hareeb, who had never been outside the top three in any of his eight races, scored his second win in the ninth as he took the 2300m Handicap (0-95) for 5YO+ Purebred Arabians by two and a half lengths for trainer Rudy Nerbonne and under jockey Soufiane Saadi.

Also yesterday, Al Wasmiyah Farm’s Gubbass (IRE) on Al Uqda debut, won the 1400m Graduation for 4YO+ Thoroughbreds. The Georges Mikhalides-trained 4YO gelding was partnered by jockey Saadi to a one and a half-length victory.
