Geneva: The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) stressed the need for an urgent increase in life-saving support to refugees and displaced persons in Sudan and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
UNHCR Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes Region, Mamadou Dian Balde told the media that the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023 led to a refugee crisis that spread to neighboring countries.
He added that in less than two years, over 3.7 million people have left Sudan and found themselves in a difficult situation in neighboring countries.
Those displaced civilians due to the conflict in Sudan need humanitarian assistance and an end to the violence to enable them to return to their homeland, calling on donors to increase support to meet the urgent needs of Sudanese refugees.
He added that before January 2025, there were more than 800,000 refugees from the DRC in the Great Lakes region.
