Significant rise in private vehicle registration

Doha: Qatar saw a significant rise in new vehicle registrations in January. The total number of registered new vehicles stood at 7,983 in January 2022, recording a growth of 46 percent compared to same month in 2021. 

The registration of private vehicles and motorcycles surged in January, according to data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA), last week.

The registration of private motorcycles was 1,467 in January 2022 compared to 734 in the previous month and 270 in January 2021, registering a rise of 99.9 percent and 443.3 percent on year-on-year and month-on-month basis. Out of the total new vehicles, the private new motorcycles accounted for 18 percent. The registration of private vehicles accounted 54 percent of the total new vehicles which stood at 4,270, registering a rise of 14.4 percent on yearly basis and a decline of 5.6 percent on monthly basis. 

The rise in vehicle registrations is a sign that the country’s economy is recovering as more cars are being bought and sold. The registration of new private transport vehicles stood at 1,714 in January 2022 which showed a 45.5 percent rise in year-on-year basis and an increase of 2.2 percent on a monthly basis. 

Such vehicles formed 21 percent of the total new vehicles in January 2022. The registration of trailers witnessed a decline of 10.6 percent and 6.7 percent annually and monthly respectively in the review period.  January also saw a rise in registration of heavy equipment. 

The total number of registered heavy vehicles stood at 224 in January 2022, recording a growth of 37.4 percent compared to same month in 2021 and 25.1 percent on monthly basis.

According to figures in the report, the clearing of vehicles processes stood at 131,944, showing a monthly and annual increase of 8.1 percent and 6.1 percent respectively. The renewal of vehicles was 47,780, seeing a rise of 11.4 percent and 6.7 percent in the same period monthly and yearly. The transfer of ownership stood at 30,668 vehicles, an increase of 3.2 percent and 1.8 on year-on year and month-on-month basis. The total number of traffic violations registered during January 2022 were 214,248, witnessing a yearly rise of 36.7 percent and monthly increase of 9.2 percent.

Out of the total traffic violations registered in January 2022, speed limit violation (radar) accounted for 76 percent, while stand and wait rules and obligations violations were 8 percent. The speed limit violation (radar) of vehicles was 162,826. There were 6,226 traffic signal violations in January 2022. The violations registered in Qatar vary from having no number plates, covering the number plates, to making loud noise and other serious traffic violations.
