Tomas Tatar of the Detroit Red Wings controls the puck in the second period against Joel Ward of the Washington Capitals in their NHL match at Verizon Center in Washington DC yesterday.
Washington: Held silent for 60 minutes, right winger Alex Ovechkin erupted in overtime, scoring a power-play goal 2:37 into the extra period to give the Washington Capitals a thrilling win over the Detroit Red Wings in their National Hockey League match yesterday.
Ovechkin’s goal, his league-leading 39th of the season, came with the Capitals on a 4-on-3 power play following a tripping minor on Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith.
On Friday night, Ovechkin earned the Capitals a point when he scored with seven seconds remaining in regulation in a 4-3 overtime loss in Detroit. The Red Wings wasted a hat trick by right wing Gustav Nyquist in the loss. Winnipeg right winger Michael Frolik scored 1:04 into the third period to send the Jets on to a 2-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens yesterday.
Left winger Andrew Ladd stripped the puck from Montreal goalie Carey Price in front of the goal line in the left corner to set up the goal that restored Winnipeg’s one-goal lead. Ladd, the Jets’ captain, fed the puck out front to Frolik, who scored his 12th goal before Price could scramble back to the net.Reuters
