Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will hold its first concert this year tomorrow, February 2, at Katara Open House at Katara Cultural Village.

Dubbed “Serenades for Strings,” the music will be from Antonín Dvorák and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Dvorák’s Serenade for Strings in E Major is one of his most popular orchestral works, and was composed in just two weeks in May of 1875. Meanwhile, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings in C Major was inspired by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and was completed in 1880.

The concert will be led by conductor Joo Young Oh. Speaking to The Peninsula, he said: “We at QPO are very pleased and fortunate to present these performances on upcoming Wednesday, especially because it is the first event of the year for QPO. Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we were only able to have limited members on stage for these concerts and that is the reason why we have chosen two very well-known works in the classical music repertoire by Dvorak and Tchaikovsky written only for string instruments (Violins, Violas, Cellos and Basses).

“Often, these masterworks are performed under the baton of a conductor, but also without, when in a more of a chamber orchestra setting which is the case for our concerts. We all have  important roles in playing these wonderful pieces of music and it certainly will be very pleasing to watch and listen to. We would truly appreciate your interest and attendance on Wednesday.”

The concert will have two slot timings, one at 5pm and at 7:30pm, and tickets are available at QPO’s website priced at QR125 for Upper, Side and Middle Orchestra sitting; QR175 for Front Orchestra, and QR200 for Center Orchestra.

Only fully-vaccinated individuals will be admitted, and the concert won’t have an intermission.
