New YOrk: The Los Angeles Kings caught fire with four unanswered goals to snap Anaheim’s winning streak and extend their own in a 5-2 victory yesterday.
In a marquee matchup against their cross-town rivals, Los Angeles trailed 2-1 in the second period before unleashing a scoring binge that decided the game.
Dustin Brown tied the contest with about two minutes left in the second, and the Kings flourished on their home ice in the third where Slava Voynov, Jake Muzzin and Jeff Carter all netted to seal the win.
“For us to come out and win that third period, that was the first time I felt we were clicking like we had last year,” Los Angeles defenseman Drew Doughty told reporters.
“The crowd was going nuts. We just had all the momentum.”
The victory was a fourth straight for Los Angeles (9-6-2) and moved them into second place behind the Pacific-leading Ducks (13-3-1), who had a six-game win stretch halted.
Goaltender Viktor Fasth saw his magical run of winning his first eight starts come to an end.
He made 20 saves but was no match for the defending NHL champions.
“It had to come at some point,” Fasth said.
“For every win you have, you get closer to a (loss). Just start over. We have to forget this and move on.”
Andrew Cogliano and Saku Koivu had goals for Anaheim in the second, to sandwich a score from Los Angeles’ Dustin Penner.
