New York: Tomas Vokoun made 33 saves and Brandon Sutter snapped a tie early in the third period for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who rallied for a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders yesterday, stretching their winning streak to 11 games.
Sutter took a pass from Matt Cooke in front off a 2-on-1 rush and beat Evgeni Nabokov 1:46 into the third period.
Former Northeastern player Joe Vitale and Chris Kunitz had second-period goals for Pittsburgh, which erased a pair of one-goal deficits after a sluggish first period.
Pascal Dupuis added an empty-net goal with less than a second remaining, assisted by Vokoun, to finish the scoring.
Mark Streit put the Islanders ahead in the first, and Josh Bailey answered Vitale’s goal to make it 2-1 in the second, but New York went on to lose its third straight at home.
Elsewhere, Nick Foligno scored twice in a club-record 51 seconds as part of a three-goal outburst in a 1:15 span of the second period and Columbus beat visiting Calgary, extending its franchise-record points streak to 12 games.
Artem Anisimov, Colton Gillies, and Jared Boll also scored and Sergei Bobrovsky continued his strong play with 24 saves.
Curtis Glencross scored for the Flames, who have lost their past nine road games (0-8-1).
Meanwhile, Alex Ovechkin scored two goals and Braden Holtby made 30 saves to lead Washington past host Winnipeg.
Brooks Laich, Troy Brouwer, Jay Beagle, and Mike Green also scored for the Capitals and Mike Ribeiro had two assists. Dustin Byfuglien scored for Winnipeg at 9:51 goal of the third, ending Holtby’s shutout bid.
Justin Abdelkader notched his first career hat trick, Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and two assists, and Detroit ended Anaheim’s club-record 13-game home winning streak.
