Washington: The Pittsburgh Penguins scored twice on the power play to beat the New York Islanders 3-1 and hand the visitors their first loss of the season.
The Penguins (3-1-0) conceded the first goal but recovered to win for the eighth time in their last nine regular-season meetings with the Islanders.
Sidney Crosby picked up the primary assist on Pittsburgh’s first goal, scored by Evgeni Malkin, giving him at least one point in nine of his last 10 games versus the Islanders.
The Ottawa Senators continued their early season roll by defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 for their fourth consecutive victory.
A spectacular goal by Senators winger Mike Hoffman, his first of the season, with 10:22 left in the third period proved to be the winner as Ottawa goalie Robin Lehner made some big saves to preserve the win.
Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture each scored a power-play goal and Antii Niemi turned aside 34 shots as the unbeaten San Jose Sharks scored a 4-2 road win over the New Jersey Devils.
Patrick Marleau, who also had an assist on Couture’s goal, scored a third-period goal for the Sharks, his fourth of the season, as San Jose picked up their fourth win of the season.
Boston coasted to an easy 4-0 road win over the Buffalo Sabres, with defencemen Dougie Hamilton, Zdeno Chara and Torey Krug all scoring for the Bruins.
Goalie Niklas Svedberg made 32 saves for his first career shutout.
Defenceman P.K. Subban scored twice to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 home win over the Colorado Avalanche.
Goaltender Carey Price made 32 saves for Montreal (5-1-0), his first start this season in which he gave up fewer than three goals.
The Washington Capitals beat the Florida Panthers in a shootout as goaltender Justin Peters made the most of his return to the crease.
Peters, in his first NHL start in nearly nine months, turned aside 20 of 21 shots through 65 minutes and one of two in the shootout to earn his first victory for the Capitals. Henrik Zetterberg’s goal with 10 seconds left in overtime gave the Detroit Red Wings a 1-0 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. REUTERS
