DOHA - Under the umbrella of the Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation (QCSF), a group of universities, colleges, and higher education institutions in Qatar will organise a series of sports, physical, and entertainment activities at the QCSF headquarters on September 20 to celebrate the International Day of University Sport (IDUS).
By celebrating IDUS, QCSF is kickstarting its plan to develop sports and physical activities inside higher education institutions in a way that will keep everyone open-minded to building a better sports culture and engaging in sporting activities regularly, stated a press release from the organisers on Sunday.
This IDUS is a key official sport event approved on the agenda of the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) and adopted by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). It is aimed at creating links between universities and the local communities to develop both health and sport for everyone.
According to the release, IDUS coincides with the beginning of the academic year in most countries around the world. Therefore, it has been proclaimed and approved by the United UNESCO to be celebrated annually on September 20, because it is also the date the first Student World Championships kicked off in 1924.
FISU will spare no effort to ensure that all national university sports federations under its membership are at the heart of the IDUS events, not only to promote its sports events but also to create a debate on university sport and to promote FISU values.
IDUS presents an opportunity to share knowledge on key issues relating to the development of sport and the university sports movement worldwide, and to improve awareness of the importance of sport in educational institutions, the release added.
