Doha, Qatar: Terming Qatar a “trusted partner in the Middle East region” for Mexico, Ambassador H E Guillermo Ordorica has said bilateral relations have broadened and deepened significantly in recent years.

In an interview with The Peninsula, Ambassador Ordorica acknowledged the significance of the bilateral relationship between Qatar and Mexico saying, “This is a very auspicious moment for Mexico and Qatar. The bilateral relationship grows more every day, and the diversity of subjects on the common agenda is a good example of the quality and consistency of the bonds between the two countries.”

He said that both nations share a commitment to peace, adherence to international law, and collaboration on global issues, including poverty reduction, climate change, natural disasters, and humanitarian crises.

Ambassador Ordorica also discussed his efforts since taking office in October 2022, aimed at further strengthening the bilateral relationship. He has engaged with various stakeholders, identifying areas of opportunity and cooperation in higher education, trade, investment, and culture.

“Let me underline that this is the natural result of a relation that has proven to be very positive for both countries and also the consequence of the government of Mexico’s decision to strengthen it. At the moment, we have several projects in progress in different fields, including cooperation in higher education, trade, investment, and culture,” said Ambassador Ordorica.

Looking ahead, Mexico seeks to draw inspiration from Qatar’s experience hosting the World Cup 2022 as it prepares to host the event in 2026, alongside the United States and Canada.

Ambassador Ordorica noted that Mexico is an attractive destination for trade and investment, serving as a gateway to the North American market. He also emphasized Mexico’s appeal for near shoring, a priority in the bilateral agenda.

“It is important to mention that, just like Qatar, Mexico is an attractive destination for increased trade, investment and exchanges, as my country is a gateway to the North American market, which is the world’s most dynamic and promising one.

“I also want to highlight the very attractive opportunities for investment that Mexico offers for near shoring. This is an area to which we attach great importance in our bilateral agenda,” he said.

In terms of promoting culture and people-to-people connections, the first Mexican Culture Week was held in Qatar - which centred on the connections between Spanish and Arabic languages and opened new avenues for cultural cooperation. Mexico’s participation in Expo Doha 2023: Green Desert, Better Environment, was also confirmed, showcasing Mexico’s commitment to sustainability and environmental cooperation on the world stage.

In an effort to empower the Mexican community in Doha, Ambassador Ordorica highlighted a successful programme for women entrepreneurs. He said the programme was supported by the Institute for Mexicans Abroad, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of Qatar, and Qatar Media Corporation, which facilitates the integration of participants into the Qatari business environment.
