Doha, Qatar: As the designated Official Sustainable City of Expo 2023 Doha, Msheireb Properties is gearing up to highlight the remarkable achievements of Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD), aligning perfectly with the theme of the six-month-long international event.
The Expo’s theme, “Green Desert, Better Environment,” underscores the significance of sustainability in today’s world. Moreover, it has four subthemes: Modern Agriculture, Technology and Innovation, Environmental Awareness, and Sustainability.
Msheireb Properties revealed it is ready to demonstrate how MDD exemplifies the four key subthemes.
“As the developer of the world’s first fully built smart and sustainable city district and downtown regeneration project, Msheireb Downtown Doha (MDD) clearly illustrates what the use of innovative solutions can achieve across all four of this year’s Expo focus areas,” Msheireb Properties CEO, Ali Al Kuwari told The Peninsula.
Modern Agriculture: MDD fosters a community of eco-conscious residents, offering comprehensive training and educational programmes to assist both individual and commercial tenants in achieving greater sustainability in their operations. This includes the launch of the Green Programme, specially designed for resident F&B outlets to seamlessly incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their daily operations.
On Technology and Innovation: MDD exemplifies the future of urban transportation with its green tram system, powered by clean energy sources. Additionally, dedicated lanes for cyclists and pedestrians ensure sustainable mobility within the city.
MDD takes a proactive approach to waste management with an integrated advanced collection and segregation system, prioritising recycling and reuse. “All the buildings at MDD are either Green or Gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified for adhering to the highest global standards in sustainable built environments.”
Meanwhile, on the topic of Environmental Awareness: MDD’s design harmonises seamlessly with the local environment.
“It uses technology, old and new, to achieve maximum comfort with minimum energy use, creating shade, minimising heat gains, and harnessing the natural forces of the sun and wind, while protecting the natural habitat and plants native to the region,” Al Kuwari explained.
On Sustainability, the CEO explained that MDD has achieved an impressive 30% reduction in energy consumption through the implementation of cutting-edge technological solutions, including smart building design and extensive solar energy capture.
Al Kuwari said their commitment to Expo 2023 Doha is deeply rooted in Msheireb Properties’ fundamental belief that sharing knowledge and experiences within the sustainable building, construction, and urban planning sectors is paramount in addressing the environmental challenges that lie ahead.
“This extends to providing support for the marketing and communications efforts of Expo 2023 Doha, and as a case in point of what the future of cities can look like, we will welcome visitors to MDD to showcase how an urban community can be designed in harmony with the surrounding environment using sustainable building practices and daily operations rooted in sustainability.”
