Qatari sailors excel at GCC event in Doha

Doha: Qatar sailors came up with excellent performances in their own backyard to clinch a rich haul of three gold medals at the 6th GCC Sailing Championship, which concluded here yesterday.
In the four-day championship, the local sailors topped in three of the five categories: Laser 4.7, Laser RDL and Laser STD categories.
Oman clinched the top spots in the remaining two, Optimist and Hobie – 16.
On the fourth day of the GCC regatta, Saleh Telfat of Qatar overcame the challenge of Khamis Khadim Alwahaibi of Oman to finish first, while Saoud Alnaar of Bahrain came third.
In the Laser Radial, the hosts again stamped their superiority with Faris Al Bakri of Qatar walking away with top honours followed by Ali Buhamad of Kuwait and Ebrahim Showaiter of Bahrain.
In the Laser Standard, Waleed Al Sharshani of Qatar clinched gold, followed by Sami Al Kooheji of Bahrain and Ahmed Hassan Albulushi of Oman.
Oman, which won the Optimist Team event on the first day of the championship, continued the good show by winning the individual event.
Omani sailors won the Optimist class with Ahmed Jaber Almujaini clinching the gold and Mansoor Mohammed Almahrooqi the bronze, while Abdulaziz Alsaib of Kuwait came second.
In the Hobie – 16 category, Oman made it 1-2 with the pair of Akram Alwahaibi and Aziz Adayem Alwahaibi topping the event, followed by Musab Mohammed Alhadi and Mohammed Alwahaibi. The Bahraini pair of Mohanna Al Dooseri and Mustafa Janahi had to be content with the bronze medal.
Sailors from Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar took part in the championship.
