NHL: Orpik’s winner sends Pens through to next round

NEW YORK: Defenceman Brooks Orpik scored 7:49 into overtime to send the Pittsburgh Penguins to the second round of the NHL play-offs with a 4-3 victory over the New York Islanders yesterday.

Orpik, who posted his first career play-off goal, fired a long drive from just inside the blue line that beat Islanders’ goaltender Evgeni Nabokov to give the Penguins a 4-2 series victory.

Penguins’ forward Tyler Kennedy set up the winner by passing back to Orpik for a one-timer.

Paul Martin tied the game l for the Penguins, who will square off against the high-flying Ottawa Senators in the quarter-finals of the NHL’s postseason.

Jarome Iginla and Pascal Dupuis also scored to support an impressive 35-save performance from Tomas Vokoun.

John Tavares, Colin McDonald and Michael Grabner scored for the Islanders, who were aiming to take Pittsburgh to a game seven of series today.AFP
