Doha, Qatar: Doha residents were left in stitches as top African comedians Mr. Funny from Nigeria and Mammito Eunice from Kenya took the stage at the African Night of Laughter.
The event held at the Holiday Inn Hotel yesterday was attended by the Ambassador of South Africa H E Ghulam Hussein, Ambassador of Kenya H E Boniface Mwilu and representatives from the Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda and Uganda embassies.
Speaking to the audience at the start of the show Ambassador Ghulam, quoting the great Nelson Mandela buttressed Africa’s penchant for humour and hailed the organisers for putting up a show to tell the continent’s story.
“This is an opportunity for Africa to showcase its talent and humor. It is also a moment for us to connect with each other,” he said.
The mixed audience at the event showcased the diversity in Qatar’s population with Africans, Asians, Europeans and Americans in the audience.
“It’s a pleasure to be here and we have been entertained. The comedians were great and the organisers were thoughtful to have brought these comics,” Mikel, a Nigerian resident in Doha said.
While Mammito’s jokes were based on Africa’s uniqueness, Mr. Funny focused more on social issues, and local stories from Nigeria.
“I came here to see Mr. Funny and I wasn’t disappointed. I watch his skits on Instagram and he’s extremely funny. I also enjoyed Mammito’s performance,” Donald, another Nigerian said.
The African Night of Laughter was organised by Oryx Group Entertainment, and sponsored by Qatar Tourism.
