DOHA: The National Sport Day 2025 will be marked tomorrow with an array of sporting and wellness activities across the country.
Qatar places great importance on sports, which is reflected in its Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030 and Qatar National Vision 2030. Qatar has solidified its commitment to sports by designating a National Sport Day, which is marked and observed annually as an official holiday on the second Tuesday of February.
Since its inaugural celebration in 2012, the Qatar National Sport Day has aimed to encourage participation in sporting activities, with hundreds of sports-related events taking place across the country.
Qatar marked the National Sport Day for the first time in February 2012, after the issuance of Amiri Decree No. 80 of 2011, that Tuesday of the second week of February of each year be a National Sport Day, and a paid holiday during which ministries, other government agencies, public bodies and institutions organize sports events in which workers and their families participate to raise awareness of the importance of sports and its role in the lives of individuals and societies.
All state institutions participate in this sporting event, turning Qatar into a large stadium where tens of thousands of citizens and residents from all segments of society engage in various sports activities.
Qatar is considered a pioneer in organising the National Sport Day, both regionally and globally. Inspired by its success, other countries have started adopting similar initiatives, recognizing the importance of such events for both individuals and communities.
The Ministry of Sports and Youth has readied eight neighbourhood playgrounds for National Sports Day.
“Enjoy a unique sports experience in the neighbourhood playgrounds that are now more ready to receive you. The Ministry of Sports and Youths renovates eight playgrounds in different areas, with new floors and walking paths, to be the ideal destination for practicing sports, coinciding with the National Sports Day,” said the Ministry on X platform.
The eight neighbourhood playgrounds are Freej Al Markhiya, Freej Al Duhail Al Shamal, Freej Al Duhail Al Janoub, Freej Abu Hamour, Freej Al Aseeri, Freej Ain Khalid, Freej Nuaijah and Freej Al Wakrah. The Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with the Qatari Police Sports Federation, will organise a variety of sporting activities at Old Doha Port Park.
