Doha, Qatar: The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has opened the application process for the 2024 Qatari Film Fund, accepting submissions until February 1.

The fund, dedicated to nurturing cinematic talent, aims to support the development of up to four feature films and the creation of up to eight short films annually.

DFI expressed its commitment to advancing the skills and achievements of Qatari filmmakers through the Qatari Film Fund. “The fund is committed to the development of up to four feature films, and the development, production and post-production of up to eight short films annually,” said DFI on its website.

The initiative provides financial support for the production of feature films, with one outstanding project selected for additional funding in the subsequent year. The selection process involves two funding cycles each year.

Qatari directors and writers are eligible for funding under this programme. Feature films in progress can receive financial support for production, while short films are eligible for funding up to QAR182,500, covering development, production, and post-production expenses, along with mentorship, equipment, and production support.

DFI will actively engage with successful applicants throughout the filmmaking process, assisting in script development, finalization, budgeting, scheduling, and securing creative and technical teams. The Institute is dedicated to providing a comprehensive support system, including mentorship opportunities with industry specialists.

For feature film treatments and screenplays, development funding valued at up to QAR182,500 is available. This includes tailored development services, mentorship, equipment, and various other forms of support. DFI will collaborate closely with filmmakers to offer services such as research, script notes, feedback, legal assistance, location scouting, budgeting, scheduling, and casting.

Moreover, DFI remains committed to fostering creativity through its Learning Initiatives. Screenwriters, writer-directors, and producers in Qatar are encouraged to approach the Institute with early-stage film ideas. “The Institute will assist with the development, production and post-production of projects through filmmaking workshops and in-house development, and help prepare applications for funding from the Qatari Fund as appropriate,” it said on its website.
