DOHA: The first cohort of students at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI), made up of 131 students attended orientation, which took place earlier today. Students were introduced to their respective programmes as well as their academic advisors who guided registration for courses for this semester.
Dr Hend Al Muftah, Vice President for Administration and Finance, delivered the welcome remarks to the students, “The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies is a significant addition to graduate studies in the Arab world because its founding was intended to fill a void in graduate studies in the fields of: social sciences, humanities, public administration and development economics. Ultimately, our objective is to nurture a new generation of Arab academics and researchers who are able to pose practical solutions to the region’s most pressing issues.”
The DI offers 9 graduate programs in its two schools with Arabic as the main language of teaching and research.
Professor Rasheed El-Enany, Dean of School of Social Sciences and Humanities, introduced the 7 graduate studies programs offered at the school. Similarly, the 2 graduate programmes of the School of Public Administration and Development Economics, were presented by Professor and Dean Hassan Aly. Also, Dr Alaa Al Gibali offered an introduction to the Language Center, a resource to support students conducting academic research in Arabic as well as other languages.
Students at the DI come from various countries across the Arab world and have been arriving in Doha over the past few days.
The first academic year will commence tomorrow, Sunday, October 4, 2015. This inaugural class of students will be on track to receive a master’s degree in one of the 9 programs offered by the DI, with an expected graduation in June 2017.
