'Qatar aims to become regional model for worker rights, safety'

Brussels: Minister of Labour H E Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri, has affirmed the State of Qatar’s commitment to strengthening partnership and cooperation with the European Parliament.

During current visit to Brussels, the Minister reiterated Qatar’s commitment to developing laws related to the labour market and protecting workers, and everything that would preserve the occupational health and safety of workers in various sectors and occupational disciplines, explaining that the reforms undertaken by Qatar in the last years are not linked to a specific event or circumstance, but rather are the embodiment of a firm political will and the implementation of Qatar National Vision 2030.

He pointed out that the strategic vision of Qatar aims to be a role model in the region in respect of workers’ rights and occupational health and safety standards.

The Minister met in Brussels with a number of officials in the European Parliament and European trade unions and organisations, where he held meetings with the Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament, Juan Fernando Lopez Aguilar; Head of the Subcommittee for Human Rights in the European Parliament, Maria Arena; Member of the European Parliament for Germany Ismail Ertug; Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation for Relations with the Arabian Peninsula, Hannah Neumann and the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation Luca Vicentini.
