Sailing: Yasar of Turkey tops at Qatar Optimist Cup in Doha

Doha: Rasim Yasar of Turkey set aside the challenge of Marsha Shahrin of Singapore to emerge as overall champion in the Qatar Optimist Cup here yesterday.
Yasar finished with 14 points in the six-day event organised by Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation (QSRF). 
The Turkish lad finished with the least number of penalities to win the top prize in the boys section. No other boy competitor could come close to  challenging Yasar dominance as the next three places in the overall standings were grabbed by the girl sailors.
Two girl sailors, Shahrin and Florine Bramervaer of  the Netherlands, finished in the second and third position in the overall standings. 
Shahrin finished with 58 points and the Dutch girl on 59, while another girl Okyanus Arikan of Turkey came fourth. Among the boys, Nicolas Rolaz of Switzerland came fifth and Fares Abdelfettah of Algeria finished sixth. 
The overall champion in both the boy’s and girls section will get QR4000, while the runner-up will receive QR3000 and the third place finisher QR2000, in both the sections.
Around 51 sailors from 14 countries Algeria, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Spain, Finland, Germany, India, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, UAE, besides Qatar took part in the championship.
Turkey won the Optimist Team Racing event and will be richer by QR2000,while the second place finishers will get QR1500 and the place winners QR1000.
Qatar fielded 14 sailors in the competition.
The Peninsula
