Doha: Plans are afoot to introduce minimum speed limit on certain roads in Qatar. This was disclosed by a senior official on a radio programme recently.
Like having a maximum speed limit, a minimum speed limit will be introduced on some highways as vehicles moving too slowly on these highways could cause accidents.
This practice is already in place in many countries including UAE.
On the possibility of fixing a minimum speed on some highways, Brigadier General Mohammed Saad Al-Kharji, Director of the General Directorate of Traffic, said, during the programme "Kaifa Asbaht" in Quran Radio, that the traffic law will be amended to include this clause.
“The minimum speed, like maximum speed, will be introduced on highways like F-Ring Road, Shamal Highway, Dukhan and Bu Samra highways. These highways have a maximum speed of 120km/h and should have a minimum speed of 80km/h because very slow vehicles pose danger to other vehicles,” he said in the programme.
During the radio show, Al Kharji also revealed that there are directives from the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, to identify special parking space for elderly.
The administration is also studying a plan to put a special sign on the number plates of people with special needs.
Al-Kharji also said that work is going on to put electronic signage in a number of main streets to show changes in speed limit as per the condition of the road as more than 90 percent of the accidents are due to over speed.
