Doha: Meat shops in Qatar are facing acute shortage of subsidized Australian meat. Each meat shop is getting only five slaughtered animals daily instead of the 20 they used to get before, Arabic daily Al-Sharq reported.

A source told Al-Sharq newspaper that the problem is linked to the country of origin. As they are facing difficultly in exporting the required numbers, the quantity reaching Widam company is much less than required.

Australian meat is preferred by majority of residents in Qatar as it is priced much less compared to other meat available in the market.

The problem is only getting worse day by day and there is no any clarification from the company about the reason for the same. Majority of low-income people buy this kind of meat as it is available for reasonable prices.

Some meat shops accused Widam of focussing on selling large quantities to restaurants and forcing others to use other kind of meat. They demanded that the company coordinate with the country of origin to provide sufficient quantity needed in the local market.
