Qatar’s enduring commitment

In a historic and decisive move, H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s visit to the Syrian marks a significant turning point in regional diplomacy. As the first head of state to visit Syria since the downfall of the previous regime in December 2024, this visit is more than symbolic - it represents Qatar’s steadfast commitment to supporting Syria’s reconstruction and stability. The timing of this visit is crucial, coming at a moment when Syria is in dire need of support to rebuild on the foundations of dignity, human rights, and legitimate aspirations. The Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, emphasized Qatar’s unwavering position in supporting Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and independence. More importantly, Qatar has actively engaged in discussions on Syria’s most pressing humanitarian and developmental needs, demonstrating its readiness to play a key role in rebuilding the war-torn nation. Qatar welcomed all reformation steps taken by the new Syrian government, viewing them as crucial for fostering national consensus, stability, and progress. As well Qatar underscored the importance of a single national army that represents all Syrians, ensuring sovereignty and security as the country moves toward a peaceful political transition. One of the most striking indicators of Qatar’s commitment is the reopening of its embassy in Damascus after 13 years. This signals Qatar’s recognition of Syria’s new political landscape while maintaining its fundamental stance against repressive former regime policies. Additionally, Qatar’s humanitarian efforts remain unwavering, as exemplified by the inauguration of the Al Amal residential city project, which provides shelter to thousands of displaced Syrians.
