Doha: Ashghal has relocated the well-known shell sculpture (Pearl Monument) at the erstwhile shell roundabout to the Al Fardah Roundabout in Al Wakra Old Souq adjacent to Al Wakra port.
“Stemming from it keenness to preserve the culture heritage of Qatar and in alignment to Qatar National vision 2030, the relocation works were accomplished in collaboration with the Private Engineering Office (PEO), as part of the expressway project of the upgrade of Al Wakra Main Road,” Ashghal said in a statement.
The Pearl Monument was removed from its original location in Al Wakra to help convert the Pearl Roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection as part of Al Wakra Main Road Upgrade Project.
When in 2018 it was announced that the roundabout will be converted to a signal and the structure will be removed, many people had taken to social media requesting to conserve the sculpture as it is a landmark of Al Wakra city.
Authorities had said then that it won’t be demolished and will be shifted to a new location to preserve the heritage of the city.q
