Qatar Charity opens refugee simulation exhibition

In a unique move, Qatar Charity (QC) yesterday opened a refugee simulation exhibition showcasing life of Syrian refugees and those displaced internally in shelters.The exhibition,”below zero,”  at Gulf Mall, aims to educate visitors on sufferings of refugees, fighting for survival, due to lack of basic requirements of life.

The initiative is part of a massive campaign to collect over QR 100m to cover needs of 3.5 million Syrian refugees and those displaced, world wide. The campaign “Syria...cold and hunger” hopes to provide beneficiaries winter clothes, food items and shelter among the others.

“State-of -the -art technology and innovative methods are being put to use in charity sector for the first time, here. This is to embody the sufferings of the Syrian people,” said Faisal Alfahidh, QC’s Executive Director of Operations.

Visitors are being taken in batches to various tents, inside the pavilion, demonstrating plight of refugees including poor facilities and lack of basic necessities and medicines. Live description of living conditions of those in conflict areas are run at each tent. Visitors are asked to put themselves in place of Syrian refugees and think about their needs at such situations.     

The exhibition focuses on students and the public in general, urging them to stand by Syrian people who are experiencing harsh winter conditions where they currently live.

Qatar Charity has urged public and students of schools and universities to visit the exhibition and understand magnitude of the tragedy suffered by Syrians in general and in during winter season in particular. The exhibition that opened yesterday will continue until December 4 from 10am to 10pm.

The campaign “Syria...cold and hunger” aims at providing shelter, clothing, food, medicine and sanitary materials. Through the donations, QC also hopes to establish health facilities and provide medical equipment and ambulances.

The first phase of campaign will provide 10 products, which includes a “food basket” which has   basic food supply for family to last  a month at the cost of QR200, a bag of bread that lasts a family for a day at QR10, meals for one person a day QR10, drinking water for a person a day QR5, cleaning kit for a family hygiene at QR150. Other requirements also include heaters, blankets, winter clothing bag (including winter clothing, children jackets and woolen socks, hats and gloves) worth QR300.

The second phase will include tents at the value of QR2500 and fitted caravans worth QR27,000. The later phases of the campaign will covered more  items.
