Doha: Ministry of Economy and Commerce has announced the recall of Tommee Tippee Sippy Cups sold between 2014 and 2016 because bacteria may accumulate in the one-piece white valve if not properly cleaned.
These cups are popular among parents as they are spill proof and used by babies four to 12 months old.
According to international reports five types of 7- and 10-ounce cups are affected: First Sips Transition cups, Trainer Sippee cups, Sippee cups, Sportee bottles and Insulated Swiggle/Sippee tumblers. All of them have a white one-piece removable valve.
The cups come is different colour and design and all the cups with the one piece white-valve are recalled.
The Ministry, in collaboration with TruCare, dealer of Tommee Tippee products in Qatar, has announced that they will coordinate to follow up on the recall and will communicate with customers to ensure that the necessary steps are carried out.
On their website Tommee Tippe said that “Mold can develop on the removable, one-piece, white valve inside the cup when it remains wet/moist and is infrequently cleaned.
“Although the resulting risk of gastrointestinal symptoms and infections in consumers with compromised immune systems is low, the product is being voluntarily recalled.”
In US and Canada they have asked people to stop using the cup and mail them the cup lids with the white valve and the costumers can chose either a Trainer Straw Cup with no valve or a Trainer Sippee Cup with the new easy-clean 2-piece valve seen here (handles are removable from both styles). Customers can select the same in the online form in US and Canada.
How the recall will be done in Qatar is not clear yet. As of now people should stop using the cup and wait for instructions for replacement.
The issue became viral after a Canadian father posted on his Facebook page pictures of the mold laden mouth pieces to Facebook.
According to Daily Mail Simon O'kanada decided to open up the leak-proof lid of his son's sippy cup after the boy kept getting sick.
The pictures went viral and many other parents also started complaining about the same. The company then issued the recall and has introduced a new valve, which is easy to clean.
The ministry said the recall campaign comes within the framework of its ongoing efforts to protect consumers and ensure that dealers follow up on product defects and repairs.
The Ministry urged all customers to report any violations to its Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud Department through call center: 16001 or email: [email protected]
