DOHA: Qatar will continue to host blue ribband events as it strives to help the residents, especially the youngsters, take to sports by watching the world’s top players in action, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrehman Al Thani said yesterday.
The Secretary General of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) was speaking to media on the final day of the 6th FIG World Challenge Cup held at Aspire Academy yesterday.
“This is one of the 40 international events we had planned to stage in the coming 11-12 months,” Sheikh Saoud said.
“The QOC will always strive to make Qatar the hub and capital of sports in the region.
“We want people to watch sports events and the top players in action,” he said.
“I saw a huge fan turnout today and I am glad to see people stepping out to watch sports events. We have created this sports culture and we want it to grow further,” he added.
“I congratulate the Qatar Gymnastics Federation (QGF) on hosting a fine event. This is one of the top events on the gymnastics calendar,” Sheikh Saoud said.
“We have a busy calendar of events for the next season. We will be hosting many new events as well a lot of annually-staged tournaments,” he said.
Last week QOC released the sports calendar for the 2013-2014 season, adding 21 new events.
The increase in the number of sports events to be held in the coming 12 months is part of QOC’s ambitious plans to reach a figure of at least 50 international championships.
Overall, sports fans in Doha will get to witness 11 Asian championships, 11 local events and eight Arab tournaments in the new season. THE PENINSULA
