Doha: World number one James Willstrop of England and compatriot Nick Matthew lead a galaxy of stars who are heading to Qatar for the 2012 PSA World Championship which begins at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex from December 7 to 14.
World number two Matthew will aim to complete a rare hat-trick of wins at the 2012 PSA World Squash Championship which begins at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex from December 7 to 14.
The reigning PSA World Champion has won the last two editions of the tournaments and has confirmed his entry for this year’s edition of the championship to be hosted by Qatar Squash Federation (QSF).
Qatar will be hosting the event, formerly known as the World Open, for the third time.
“All the top-ranked players will be seen in the championship and the championship is expected to be an exciting affair for the spectators. We have held the tournament in the past on two occasions in 1998 and 2004,” said QSF President Nabeel Ali bin Ali, while addressing a press conference here yesterday.
Last year Matthew became the first player in 15 years to successfully defend the title last November in Rotterdam. In 2010, he won his first title defeating compatriot James Willstrop in Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia.
Besides the two top-ranked Englishman, the QSF official informed the field includes seven Egyptians who are seeded among the top 16.
“Karim Darwish, Ramy Ashour, Amr Shabana, Mohamed El Shorbagy, Omar Mosaad, Tarek Momen and Hisham Ashour are some of the top Egyptians who will vie for top the prize of $45,600,” said the QSF President.
Qatar’s Abdulla Al Tamimi, with world ranking 136, has been handed a wild card. The qualifying rounds will begin on December 6.
