Minister: Qatar is committed to climate change agreements

Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani yesterday met GCC Ministers of Environment and wished them success in their 19th meeting,  with results that enhance the GCC march.

DOHA: The GCC ministers of environment adopted several recommendations at the end of their 19th meeting at St Regis Hotel yesterday.
Minister of Environment 
H E Ahmed Amer Al Humaidi chaired the meeting, attended by his GCC counterparts responsible of environment affairs.
“Despite efforts, recommendations, meetings and conferences we have had in the past, many environmental risks and threats to our world are still there, which require our joint efforts to fight them,” said Al Humaidi.
“The current situation requires us to enhance coordination between GCC environment entities and cooperation with regional and international organisations to put in place plans and solutions to protect the environment.”
Following the meeting, Al Humaidi told a press conference that they had adopted many recommendations raised by GCC environment undersecretaries in their meeting on Monday and Tuesday, including ‘Strategic cooperation between GCC and many other countries’
“We also discussed the issue of establishing an environment monitoring centre, studies, and agreements between GCC countries, the United Nation Environment Programme and establishing e-portal. He said Qatar is committed to all agreements regarding climate change. Next year, Qatar will host an international conference on sea pollution and another on desertification. It will also host GCC Environment and Wildlife Awards at the end of this year.
