Doha: An art exhibition “Recovery Road” aiming to raise awareness on addiction and mental health was unveiled yesterday by Msheireb Museums and Naufar.

It features 40 art pieces by recovered patients and is being housed at the Bin Jelmood House Lower Gallery in Msheireb Downtown Doha.

The paintings were depicted through three sections: reasons behind addiction, during the treatment and after recovery.

The opening is also in line with the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking annually observed every June 26.

Msheireb Museums Exhibitions Manager, Fahad Al Turky said the exhibition sheds light on a significant concern which are addiction and mental health. “We believe that art is an important and effective medium to convey awareness messages and change the perceptions of people positively.”

“We are confident that our collaboration with Naufar will succeed in accomplishing our objectives and enable our visitors to interact and engage on this important subject. This is part of our continuous collaborations with the national entities to raise awareness on matters that are relevant to our community,” he explained.

The Recovery Road exhibition is part of a series of future collaborations between Msheireb Museums and Naufar which is an evidence-based wellness centre. It can also be noted that most number of the recovered patients who participated in the exhibition had never drawn before. And the artworks have been made during their battle with the substance use, and through their recovery journey.  Moreover, they hoped they can inspire people who are suffering in silence.

Naufar Assistant Director General, Dr. Khalifa Al Kuwari said that the usage of substance is a serious health condition that can affect anyone. He also emphasised that mental health condition has been rarely discussed.

“When we understand the root causes behind substance use disorder, we can encourage many individuals and their families to seek help early in their lives. Educating and enlightening the community about the challenge that many families are facing can’t be accomplished by one entity by itself, but it can be accomplished when everyone works together,” he explained.

The Recovery Road exhibition is open every day from 9am to 5pm, except on Friday - from 3pm to 9pm.
