World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) has positively influenced the global healthcare sector in policy making, says Professor The Lord Darzi of Denham, Executive Chair of WISH.
Through its expertise and reports with recommendations on how to address pressing healthcare challengers, WISH has a major impact on Qatar and globally. WISH’s policy recommendations has positively affected several countries including the UK and Australia, according to Lord Darzi.
Since 2012, WISH has issued several reports on issues such accountable care, autism, behavioral rights, cardiovascular disease , investing in health, precision medicine, diabetes and patient safety.
WISH is a Qatar Foundation initiative, established in 2012 by H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. It aims at creating a healthier world through global collaboration. “WISH is going out globally in disseminating some of its work….. WISH reports have made an impact on policy making,” said Lord Darzi.
“WISH has become prominent globally. It is known in every corner of the world and it is an amazing achievement. Qatar in a very short period of time, through WISH summits, has made a huge global impact. Every ministry of health, every academic department with an interest in policy and public health across the globe is aware of WISH. Its great pleasure that we have managed to deliver
H H Sheika Moza bint Nasser’s vision in terms of the impact WISH has made globally,” he added.
In Qatar, through initiatives such as the model smart clinic for diabetes at Al Wakra, training medical and nursing students on safe patient care and extensive initiatives to create awareness and eliminate the stigma around conditions such as mental health problems and dementia, WISH has been able to impact on the country’s health policy and practice, says Lord Darzi. These initiatives have been implemented in collaboration with the Primary Health Care Corporation, Hamad Medical Corporation and the Ministry of Public Health.
Globally WISH continues to present its recommendations and share expertise to policy makers, influencers and practitioners in health care. “Many global events are happening and we are contributing to big policy events. Many of the clinicians, scientists, policy makers who are involved in the creation of the WISH reports are talking at such meetings about the recommendations and how they can be implemented,” said Lord Darzi.
“UK has adopted some of the recommendations on patient safety as well as in behavioural insight. Recommendations on diabetes and the cancer drug pricing has been implemented in Australia and many other countries,” he added.
Also next week WISH is hosting a meeting on patient safety, in London in partnership with local organisations.
