Al Khor stormed into the quarter-finals of the 2017 Emir Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout which saw them outplaying Al Sailiyah 4-3 (2-2) at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium yesterday.
Al Sailiyah took the lead after Tamoor Khwaja scored their first goal in the 26th minute.
Trailing 1-0 at half time, Al Khor were looking for an equaliser in the early stage of the second half and their efforts paid dividend when Madson Formagini Caridade levelled the score with a close-range kick in the 52nd minute. Al Khor secured a 2-1 lead two minutes later with Khobiyare finding the cage this time.
Al Khor were cruising towards victory before they were left stunned by an 86th minute strike, again by Tamoor taking the game into penalties.
Al Khor’s goalkeeper Baba Jibril was the star in tie breaker, blocking two of Al Sailiya’s attempts to make it 4-3 in favour of his team, assuring their berth in the quarter-finals. Al Khor will now meet Qatar Stars League champions Lekhwiya for a place in the semi-finals on May 4 at Al Sadd Stadium.
Earlier, goals from Mohammed Razark and Vladimir Weiss helped Al Gharafa down Mesaimeer 2-0 at the Hamad bin Khalifa Stadium.
Al Gharafa’s Slovakian star Vladimir Weiss was shown a yellow card in the 17th minute, but he gave them the much needed lead in the 36th minute with a spot on free kick.
Mohammed Razak doubled their lead just two minutes later, which Al Gharafa maintained to advance in the prestigious tournament.
Al Gharafa will now meet Al Rayyan in the last 8 stage at Al Sadd Stadium on May 3.
Today, Al Khairatiyat will play against Al Ahli while Umm Salal will look to topple Al Shahania for a place in the quarter-final. Both the matches will be played at Al Arabi Stadium.
The final of the tournament will be played on May 19.
