QSA releases PPI figures for Q4 2012

DOHA: The Producer Price Index of Industrial  (PPI)  sector for Q4, 2012 stood at 170.2 showing an increase of 2.8 percent as compared to Q3, 2012, according to the figures released by Qatar Statistics Authority (QSA) yesterday. 

The QSA has released the Producer Price Index (PPI) of the Industrial sector for the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2012. And the base year for the index is 2006. The Industrial sector covers Mining, Manufacturing, Electricity and Water. 

In the “Mining” group, the PPI has increased by 1.6 percent which is the combined effect of price rises in Condensate produced by the gas extraction by 6.4 percent, Condensate produced by the liquid extraction by 2.3 percent and crude oil by 1.8 percent.

The increases of 7.8 percent in the PPI for the “Manufacturing” group is mainly explained by the increases in refined petroleum products by 13.2 percent and basic chemicals by 1.8 percent.

However, a price decrease of 4.8 percent in aluminium, 1.8 percent in Iron and Steel Industry and 1.8 percent in Cement and glass products were noticed.

The PPI for “Electricity and Water” showed a rise of 9.4 percent, resulting from the price increases of 6.4 percent in the Electricity and 14.9 percent in the Water.

The year-on-year comparison (PPI of Q4 2012 compared to PPI of Q4 2011) showed an increase of 4.2 percent.

The PPI for “Mining” group increased by 3.7 percent resulting mainly from the increases in the prices of natural gas by 10.4 percent and Stone, Sand and Clay by 3.2 percent.

While, the “Manufacturing” sector, witnessed an increase of 6.3 percent, which resulted from the increase of 12.9 percent in refined petroleum products coupled with a price decline of 12 percent in Aluminum, Iron and Steel Industry group.

The PPI for the “Electricity and Water” group showed increase of 7.2 percent. While the price of Electricity increased by 4 percent and the price of water jumped by 12.9 percent.
