Doha: The Shura Council held its regular weekly session yesterday, chaired by Speaker H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, at Tamim bin Hamad Hall at the Shura Council’s premises.
The Council hailed the outcomes of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani’s state visit to India, which resulted in the signing of a bilateral strategic partnership agreement, along with several other agreements and MoUs to enhance cooperation across trade, investment, energy, education, culture, and security.
The Council also praised H H the Amir’s official visit to Iran, highlighting its role in strengthening bilateral relations through dialogue and cooperation.
The Shura Council also commended H H the Amir’s participation in the fraternal consultative meeting held on February 21 in Saudi Arabia, along with Their Majesties and Highnesses, the GCC leaders, H M the King of Jordan and H E the Egyptian President. Hailing the meeting as an important platform for enhancing consultation and coordination among Arab countries to confront current challenges, the Council highlighted that Amir's participation highlights Qatar’s commitment to supporting joint Arab action and pushing towards more consensus and coordination to achieve security and stability in the region, and enhance efforts to achieve just and comprehensive peace.
During the session, the Council debated a draft law on combating doping in sports, and referred it to the Education, Culture, Sport and Information Affairs Committee for further scrutiny.
The Council reviewed the Health, General Services and Environment Committee’s report on the government’s statement on the Council’s proposals regarding the damage caused by rainwater accumulations, and took the appropriate decision regarding it. Moreover, the Council discussed a report on the Shura Council’s hosting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly’s Standing Committee on Budget and Planning meeting in November 2024. The agenda also included a report on the Council’s December 2024 visit to the Saudi Shura Council, and another on Shura Council Member H E Omair bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi’s participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)’s briefing on ‘zero tolerance for violence against women in politics’, in December.
H E Al Ghanim informed the members about the participation of a Shura Council delegation, headed by His Excellency, in the 7th Arab Parliament Conference for the Presidents of Arab Parliaments and Councils on February 22 in Egypt. The conference sought to set out an Arab parliamentary vision supporting the steadfastness of the Palestinian people. The Speaker said the conference adopted a parliamentary document that set out a vision to support the steadfastness of the Palestinian people on their land, and reject displacement and annexation plans.
