In letter to Amir, UN thanks Qatar for unwavering support

New York: Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani received a message from  Secretary-General of the United Nations, H E Antonio Guterres, congratulating H H the Amir on the 50th anniversary of Qatar’s accession to the membership of the United Nations. The message was conveyed by  Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Ambassador H E Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani.

In the letter, the UN Secretary-General congratulated Qatar, the government and people, on the anniversary of its accession to the international organisation.

He said that the State of Qatar, over the past 50 years, has made multiple contributions in the fields of sustainable development, conflict prevention and settlement, combating terrorism, climate action, and health, at the regional and global levels.

He noted that Qatar has hosted, over the years, a number of vital UN conferences and events that helped push forward solutions based on global policies.

H E Guterres said that Doha has become an important centre for diplomacy that facilitates some of the most complex conflicts in the world, especially in Afghanistan, as Qatar provided critical support for dialogue through diplomacy and generous humanitarian aid.

He pointed out that Qatar is also a generous supporter of vital development and humanitarian efforts, and has contributed to combating the COVID-19 pandemic and provided life-saving vaccines and assistance to the most vulnerable groups.

Guterres thanked the State of Qatar for its unwavering support for the UN, explaining that he looks forward to strengthen the bonds of relations between the two in the coming years in their quest to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights for all.

For her part, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani said that the UN Secretary-General’s message reflects the extent of respect and appreciation for H H the Amir, the high position he holds at the international level, and the desire of the UN to continue cooperation with Qatar on various international issues.

Her Excellency stressed that it is a matter of pride and honour for H E the UN Secretary-General, in his message, to commend the contributions made by Qatar to all issues of concern to the international community, especially in the field of development, conflict prevention and settlement, combating terrorism, climate action, and confronting the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the assertion by H E Secretary-General that Doha has become an important international centrefor multilateral diplomacy to facilitate the settlement of the most complex disputes and to host the vital UN conferences and events.
