NEW YORK: French striker Thierry Henry (pictured) of the New York Red Bulls was suspended by Major League Soccer for one match yesterday for a headbutting incident in the 93rd minute of a match two days earlier.
The 35-year-old will miss New York’s game at New England on Saturday and be fined an undisclosed some for violent conduct over his striking Sporting Kansas City forward Kei Kamara in a 2-0 Red Bulls’ home loss on Wednesday. During a late-match substitution, Henry ran at Kamara and slammed his head into that of Kamara, sending both men falling to the field and clutching their heads in pain.
In a New York loss at Kansas City last year, Henry received a red card after slamming into Roger Espinoza away from the ball.
Henry has scored 13 goals in 21 matches this season, sharing fourth in the MLS scoring race. In 2011, the French playmaker netted 14 goals in 26 appearances for New York.
Kansas City leads the MLS Eastern Conference at 16-7 with six drawn while the Red Bulls are third in the East, five points back at 14-8-7. AFP
