Doha: Prime Minister of the National Unity Government of Libya H E Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh has stressed the necessity to raise the level of coordination and cooperation among the members of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in a way that reduces the challenges and contributes to the optimal exploitation of this rich resource to promote sustainable development.

In his speech during the 6th Summit of the GECF, which was held yesterday in Doha, Prime Minister of the National Unity Government of Libya said that countries face various challenges that require the development of a strategic plan, as well as cooperating, coordinating, exchanging experiences, transferring technology, maintaining supplies and prices that meet the ambitions, and maintain the relationship between exporting and consuming countries, to benefit from this product in developing and diversifying economies in a way that ensures a decent, stable and prosperous life for current and future generations.

He noted the growing challenges facing the fossil fuel industry as a result of the intensification of international policies related to confronting climate change, which led to a decrease in the demand for oil and gas, as well as the difficulty of obtaining the support of financial institutions for projects related to this type of energy, affirming that these challenges require an increase in the pace of coordination and cooperation among the forum countries.

He expressed his hope that this summit would be an important step in the direction of cooperating and coordinating efforts, to develop the natural gas sector through a safe and sustainable way to produce energy, and contribute to the development of all sectors.

He pointed out that this summit is being held amidst many challenges that the world is facing, foremost of which is the COVID-19 pandemic since early 2020, in addition to the issue of climate change, adding that these challenges and the policies related to them have an impact on the future of the oil and gas industry, as well as the development preparations in various countries.

In the context of his speech, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh pointed out the challenges faced by Libya during the past decade, and the efforts that are being made to promote peace and stability, develop oil and gas fields, and maximize their role in comprehensive and sustainable development.

The National Unity Government of Libya has succeeded in overcoming many obstacles — reflecting positively on the level of production, he said, adding that more effort must be made to create real partnerships to develop the oil and gas sector and use the proceeds to move towards sustainable development.
