The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that the State of Qatar and the United Nations have strategic partnership for peace and development.
In a post on its official Twitter account yesterday, the Ministry said that Qatar’s support to the UN is consistent with its foreign policy and its shared responsibilities as an active partner in the international community to achieve international peace and security; achieve sustainable development; combat terrorism; and confront the common challenge.
The post mentions $500m support from the State of Qatar to the UN agencies which Qatar announced in December last year.
It is pertinent to mention here that during 18th Doha Forum in December 2018, a number of partnership agreements were signed between the State of Qatar and the United Nations to support some of its agencies. This was done in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
At that time, H E the Deputy Prime Minister had stressed that the signing of agreements between the State of Qatar and the United Nations stem from the deep and solid relationship between the two sides.
The post of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs further said: “State of Qatar ranked first in the Arab world and sixth in the world in the list of the biggest shareholders to the multi-partnerships funds for 2017.”
The post also mentions appreciation by the top UN officials made at different occasions regarding Qatar’s generous support to the UN initiatives like, “the important support Qatar provides to our agencies contributes distinctively in different sectors”, and “the importance of our agreements with Qatar goes beyond Doha’s generous contributions to a qualitative change in the relationships between the two sides that will have important prospects in the future.”
The Ministry in its Twitter post also mentions the UN’s praise when the organisation said: “The state of Qatar which contributes in many humanitarian projects with us has become structural partner in the purposes of international organisation.”
The UN also lauded Qatar’s role saying: “Doha played key role in the central debates at the UN and supported the most difficult and thorny issues related to world peace and security.”
