Doha: The famous “Orry” statue on the corniche is set to get a facelift as part of the Doha Corniche Development works, which was started by the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) last year.

The mascot, an Oryx bearing a torch, on Doha Corniche was created during the 2006 Qatar Asian Games an has become an important landmark in Qatar’s sporting history.

Orry was the mascot of 2006 Asian Games and the symbol of the first-ever big-scale international sporting event that Doha hosted.

Ashghal started implementing the Doha Corniche Development project in October 2017, within an integrated plan to develop Corniche areas in Doha, Al Khor, Shamal City and Al Wakra Beach, as part of Corporate Social Responsibility.

The Doha Corniche Development project included extended expansion and maintenance including flooring, parking lots and toilets. All pedestrian walkways between the parking lots and the main walkway of Doha Corniche are also renovated using new interlock with a variety of designs, shapes, and colours.

This is in addition to replacing the floor of the public yard in the Corniche with new interlocks having seven squares of different sizes. The project also included renovation of all parking slots in Doha Corniche by replacing old interlock with a more solid asphalt layer enabling ease of maintenance in the future.
