A robust programme by Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is being implemented across hospitals to maintain highest level of quality and safety of the care provided to patients.

The HMC engages in an array of collaborative activities and has created a sustainable infrastructure within the hospital network to continue the improvement of quality and safety, said Prof Abdul Badi Abou Samra, Director of the Qatar Metabolic Institute and Chairman of Internal Medicine at the HMC, while speaking on the sidelines of recently held Middle East Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare 2023.

“We are focusing on quality of every new HMC hospital; we are looking into quality planning from the staff. So we have set a plan and a dedicated quality teams to implement it. Through it we want to maintain certain level of quality control and safety and ensure how the hospitals will be safe,” he said.

Prof. Abou Samra said that timely and safe transitions of care ensure people receive the support they require in the right place and at the right time, moving swiftly and seamlessly through services and settings as their needs change.

“The processes in the hospital are integrated so we have smooth transition for the patient, he said, adding that well-managed transitions between care settings provide continuity of care, such as at discharge from hospital to home.

Prof. Abou Samra, a co-chair of the Middle East Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare 2023, said the forum brought experiences from the region, US and the Europe to Qatar and vice versa.

“Through interactions we learn from the solutions which they have implemented somewhere else to similar problems. The conference discussed the concept of quality improvement in all healthcare providers, so they start thinking about quality every time they (healthcare providers) deliver healthcare.  They will think about the patient’s problem and needs and what should be done. This is very important in healthcare quality,” he said.

HMC in partnership with Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) held the Middle East Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare 2023. IHI is partnering with HMC for over ten years to support five central activities: strategic guidance and will building, the annual Middle East Forum on Quality and Safety in Healthcare, leading patient safety and quality improvement initiatives, testing and implementing methods to increase efficiency and value, and dissemination.
